Lindy van Hillo

screenwriter & director

Welcome to my website! I’m Lindy, a screenwriter and fiction director from the Netherlands. I graduated in 2024 at St. Joost School of Arts & Design.

As a filmmaker, I explore the complexities of our inner world, drawing inspiration from what makes us human. My work captures life’s intrinsic moments—revealing our vulnerability, emotions, and imperfections. I believe these raw qualities are what make us beautifully and unapologetically human. Creating fiction allows me to embrace the emotions of everyday life, with a hint of magic and surrealism to express what words often cannot. I hope to offer audiences a deeper understanding of themselves or others, fostering acceptance of the paths we’ve taken and celebrating our complex shared experience.

I focus on theme’s like intimacy, memory, trauma and time. I am fascinated by our ambiguity - the interplay between what we feel but don't say, between what we want and what we do. This fascination shapes my artistic approach: I often use non-linear narratives, intimate camera work, and long scene durations that mirror the natural rhythm of real life.  In my films, I aim to create space for reflection, questions and interpretation. For me, that is what art is—a film’s life and meaning never truly ending once the credits roll, but continuing to evolve and live on within us.

For me, the most special part of storytelling is working with actors to create authentic, lived-in characters. I focus on the psychological dimensions of human life, prioritizing emotional responses to events rather than the events themselves. Together with my actors, I carefully craft detailed character backgrounds, ensuring they feel real and relatable. I love engaging in in-depth talks to help actors truly embody their roles. Using improvisation and intuitive direction, I encourage spontaneous, genuine reactions that enrich the emotional depth of their performances. Through this collaborative emotional exploration, we get to explore the unspoken layers of our existence—and for that, I am so grateful.

Feel free to explore my work or get in touch—I’d love to connect!
